Ohio trooper probing crash on I-475 injured

An on-duty Ohio Highway Patrol trooper was hurt yesterday when his cruiser, which he was standing near, was struck by a car on ice-slickened southbound I-475, just north of Central Avenue in Sylvania Township, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Trooper Shane Borton, 32, who has been working at the patrol's Toledo post since March, 2001, was treated at St. Luke's Hospital.

Trooper Borton was standing on the road about 12:20 a.m. and was getting measurements for a single-vehicle noninjury crash that occurred there some 40 minutes earlier when his cruiser was struck by a southbound car driven by Nathan Brown, 20, of the 5800 block of Spring Hollow Drive. The trooper hurt himself when he jumped over a guardrail to get out of the way, troopers at the patrol's Toledo post said.

Mr. Brown, who was not hurt, was cited for unsafe speed under given weather conditions. It was snowing lightly, and the road had patches of ice at the time of the accident, troopers said.
