Recounts fail to alter outcomes of 2 votes

12/10/2002

Recounts conducted yesterday of two races in the Nov. 5 election have resulted in no changes to the vote totals, said Joe Kidd, director of the Lucas County Board of Elections.

In one race voters in the seven precincts of Monclova Township defeated a proposal to establish a joint economic development zone with the cities of Toledo and Maumee. The measure failed by three votes, with 1,456 opposed and 1,453 in favor.

Issue 23, a local option liquor measure which grants AJ's Carryout on East Broadway Street permission to sell wine and distilled spirits on Sunday, passed by one vote, with 129 people in favor and 128 opposed.

By a larger margin, the carryout won another local option liquor measure on the November ballot that granted its owner the right to sell wine and distilled spirits Monday through Saturday.

The Board of Elections met yesterday to confirm its certification of the votes in those elections.

It also certified the results of three elections that involved seats that span county lines - one a seat on the Ohio Board of Education, for which Martha Wise defeated Jim Bishop, and two races involving seats on the 6th District of the Ohio Court of Appeals.

In those races Republican Judith Lanzinger defeated Democrat Charles Wittenberg, and Democrat Arlene Singer defeated Republican Robert Pollex. The 6th District encompasses eight counties in northwest Ohio.

The elections board also authorized Mr. Kidd and Deputy Director Paula Hicks-Hudson to create 14 precincts in the county - most of them in fast-growing suburbs - to alleviate overcrowding at the polls.

Six will be added in Sylvania, four in Monclova Township, and three in Springfield Township. One will be added in Toledo's Ward 24.
