Craig Memorial Bridge stuck in 'up' position

12/11/2002

What goes up, should come down.

But for about 30 minutes last night, the Craig Memorial Bridge, which carries I-280 over the Maumee River, didn't.

Some sort of electrical malfunction, police reported.

That turned into a major headache, albeit brief, about 10:10 p.m. for the officers who had to divert traffic and for the motorists who had to follow new routes.

The drawbridge, whose lift-span has been plagued by problems the last few years, is to be replaced by a $220 million cable-stayed span with a central tower, which is now under construction. Completion is scheduled for 2005.
