Port Clinton board eyes emergency school tax

PORT CLINTON - The board of education is considering a 3.89-mill, five-year emergency operating levy for the May primary election ballot, Paul Lockwood, treasurer of the Port Clinton City Schools, said.

The board has asked the Ottawa County auditor to certify the amount of a proposed levy, Mr. Lockwood said. The board hopes to generate more than $1.7 million from the levy.

Without a levy, the district could have a $2 million deficit in two years, he said. “Little by little, our revenue has stayed flat and our expenses, though we've tried to keep them in line, increase,” Mr. Lockwood said.

The district, with an enrollment of 1,900, last asked for new operating money in 1994, he said.
