Deerfield officials warn of high nitrate levels in water

4/10/2003

DEERFIELD, Mich. - Village officials issued a public notice yesterday warning people about high nitrate levels in the River Raisin near the eastern edge of Lenawee County.

In the release, officials suggested that an alternate drinking source be used by pregnant women and nursing mothers. Additionally, the village's tap water should be avoided when preparing formula for infants.

The advisory remains in effect until further notice.

High nitrate levels are caused from agricultural runoff into the river and do not have adverse health affects on most adults and children. Deerfield officials are urging all residents to observe the advisory.
