Lenawee jail security inadequate, state says

5/2/2003

ADRIAN — Lenawee County officials at work on building a new jail were again threatened with legal action by the state for having inadequate facilities.

The Lenawee County Commission Criminal Justice Committee learned at yesterday's meeting that the Michigan Department of Corrections wants the county to submit a plan to address the lack of security throughout the facility. The plan is to be submitted by May 30.

The state threatened legal action if the county does not adequately address the need for more security.

Sheriff's Capt. Jack Welsh and Jail Commander Lt. Jim Crag told commissioners the budget is too tight to hire more officers. The commission plans to meet May 20 with Sheriff Larry Richardson to discuss the issue.
