Toledo Zoo displays new swamp monkey

5/16/2003

The Toledo Zoo's newborn Allen's swamp monkey is on display in its Primate Forest.

The monkey, a male named Harimu, was born May 5 to Sly and Maxine, bringing to four the number of the species there. Its name is the Swahili word a female uses to address her brother.

The first offspring of Maxine and Sly, Stone, a female, was born in August, 2001.

Few U.S. zoos breed and exhibit the species, which is native to remote areas of Angola and the Congo. Maxine is on loan from the San Diego Zoo, and Sly is on loan from the Metro Richmond, Va., Zoo.
