Pettisville will hike school-lunch prices

7/17/2003

PETTISVILLE - School lunch prices will increase by 30 cents, the school board decided this week when it approved the first such price increase in 12 years.

The lunch room lost money last school year, and the increase will provide $20,000 more a year, Superintendent Stephen Switzer said. The school, which has 550 students, sells about 400 lunches a day. The lunch room's costs increased because of salaries that were realigned last year.

Prices for pupils in kindergarten through sixth grade will be $1.50, a 25 percent increase from $1.20 last year. Sixth-graders through seniors will be charged $1.65 and adults will be charged $2.

Also this week, the board:

w Awarded a posthumous diploma to Orville Raker, who left classes at Pettisville in 1945 to serve in the U.S. military during World War II. The diploma was given to his daughter, Barb Poorman.

w Discussed limiting athletes to one sport per season. For decades the small school has allowed students to participate in two sports, but that has made scheduling difficult. No decision was reached.

w Heard an athletic boosters organization is interested in forming. The school has not had such an organization of adults, although a student group by the same name operates concession stands at volleyball and basketball games.
