Findlay councilman plans to probe officer's actions

8/5/2003

FINDLAY — Findlay Councilman John Sausser said he plans to form a council committee to investigate allegations that a city police officer used excessive force.

Mr. Sausser said he plans to bring the issue up at tonight's council meeting. Meanwhile, members of the police department are expected to protest the effort with a show of numbers at the 7:30 p.m. meeting.

According to Mr. Sausser, a committee is necessary to investigate Patrolman Thomas Siegel, who he claims has been accused of using “excessive force far beyond” what was warranted. The matter came up at the council's last meeting when the officer was given a council commendation after returning home from active duty in the Middle East. Mr. Sausser refused to vote in favor of the commendation and presented the idea of a council committee.

Officers and dispatchers from the department said they object to the proposed committee be|cause there is an internal affairs procedure for such matters.

Police Chief Tom Renninger is expected to address council tonight about the matter.
