Maumee panel opposes liquor plan for theaters

8/14/2003

Maumee City Council's safety committee recommended yesterday that the council file an objection to National Amusements' application for a liquor permit for its Showcase Cinemas in Maumee.

During a meeting in City Hall, several people spoke out against National Amusements' plans to sell liquor at the movie complex. They contend the movie complex should remain as a family-friendly, alcohol-free venue to prevent underage drinking and preserve pedestrian safety.

Joe Rideout, an attorney representing National Amusements who attended the meeting, said he will pass along the comments and concerns to National Amusements, which will likely have a response within the next few days. He read a brief statement that National Amusements intends to put a lounge in the Showcase Cinemas where food and alcohol could be served.

Council members are asking that National Amusements withdraw its application. If the application process proceeds, the council can file an objection with the Ohio Department of Commerce's Division of Liquor Control and request a hearing in Toledo. The deadline for filing an objection is Aug. 25.
