Maumee tree-trimmer dies in fall during work

The owner of a tree service business in Maumee died yesterday after he fell about 45 feet from a tree he was cutting and removing at a site in Maumee.

Mark A. Metcalf, 46, of Mark's Tree Service on Craig Road, died in St. Luke's Hospital shortly after he fell to the ground at 1005 West Wayne St. about 1:20 p.m., Maumee police said.

Mr. Metcalf climbed the tree and used safety ropes to secure himself to it.

When he cut a higher portion of the tree and it fell to the ground, the part of the tree to which he was secured broke free, causing his fall, police said.
