Park district seeks aid to extend bicycle path

FREMONT — The Sandusky County Park District has decided to file an initial application for more than $1.86 million in state funding to extend a bicycle path from Fremont to Elmore.

Steve Gruner, the park district's director, said the planned section of the North Coast Inland Trail would be 10.5 miles long and cost abut $2 million to build. Most of the project's cost would come from the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The trail has a 6.5-mile paved section that runs between Clyde and Fremont. The park district plans to extend the trail from Smith Road to Hayes Avenue in Fremont next year. However, a proposed extension from Clyde to Bellevue has been tied up in a legal dispute over ownership of a railroad right-of-way in Ottawa County.
