Maumee expects to add 200 trees to landscape

1/29/2004

Maumee officials are making plans to add more than 200 trees to the city's landscape as part of the 2004 tree planting program.

Council members recently agreed to seek bids for the trees that carry an estimated cost of $36,500. Bids will be opened at 10 a.m. Tuesday, and then officials will put together a bid tabulation and make a recommendation to council at the Feb. 2 meeting, said Joe Camp, the city's commissioner of public service.

Planting is scheduled between March 1 to May 21, or from Sept. 13 to Nov. 5 for trees that are not readily available.

The tree bid for 2004 consists of 203 trees. In 2003, the city planted 267 trees at a cost of $39,749, Mr. Camp said.

The city will be “planting new street trees where we have previously removed them due to dead trees, damaged trees, or planting where there was never a tree planted,” he said.

Plans call for the planting of 31 different species. The more common trees are maple, ash, linden, sweet gum, crab apple, and oak. The species is determined by the location where the tree is to be planted that matches the balance of the street trees within the block, Mr. Camp said.
