Safety device construction OK'd for 7 rail crossings

6/16/2004

The Ohio Rail Development Commission yesterday approved construction plans for new warning devices at seven northwest Ohio railroad crossings, and preliminary engineering for three others.

The seven for which construction was approved all are along a Norfolk Southern line that runs across northern Hancock County from Arcadia to McComb. New warning lights and gates will be installed at County Road 53 and Township Road 115 in Pleasant Township; County Road 140 and Township Roads 131 and 135 in Portage Township, and Cass Township Roads 238 and 247.

No schedule or cost estimates were announced, but similar installations typically cost between $100,000 and $150,000.

Along with the construction order, Norfolk Southern was directed to begin design for new lights and gates at Hancock County Road 216, on its Arcadia-Lima branch near Arcadia. CSX received similar orders for crossings on Putnam County Road 5 in Van Buren Township and for Thayer Road in Allen County's Bath Township.
