Toledo Fire Chief Michael Bell will be presented the second annual Glass City Community Service Award by the March of Dimes, Northwest Ohio division, on Oct. 18 at the Sylvania Country Club.

Chief Bell will be recognized for his efforts working with and for children and families in the community. He has been involved in various charitable boards, helping to find funding for institutions such as the Easter Seals Society of Northwest Ohio, Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts of America, American Red Cross, Mobile Meals, and the Bethany House shelter for abused women.

Sgt. Paul Tyson of the Bowling Green police division was one of 28 who graduated on June 18 from the Law Enforcement Foundation's Police Executive Leadership College.

The program consists of three weeks of intensive training in leadership. Sergeant Hartmen has been with the division for nine years and has worked in the patrol section. He is currently a patrol shift supervisor.

Sarah Squillante of Sylvania has been chosen to attend a summer intensive workshop with 136 others at Balletmet Columbus, a professional dance company. The workshop is for intermediate to advanced level dancers from around the country.

Gregory Hoffman of Holland was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society at a recent campus ceremony at the University of Toledo. The global, non-profit honor society is open to college or university juniors and seniors in the top 15 percent of their class.

Pamela Summons, Spanish teacher at Maumee Valley Country Day School, has received a Fulbright Teacher grant to teach in Mexico for the fall semester. She will exchange teaching positions with Alberto Napoles Barrales of Cuidad Ayala, Mexico.

The program is sponsored by the Fulbright Teacher and Administrator Exchange program, which will send approximately 200 from the United States this year for travel in the educational exchange program.

Eight middle school students from Toledo made a career expedition trip to Cincinnati and Washington, D.C. the end of June with the UPCLOSE program for girls, sponsored by COSI. The students were selected for the trip based on written essays.

They are Maria Contreras, Michelle Torres, and Nikki Dodsworth of East Toledo Junior High School; Nicole Freyre and Solana Mendoza of Queen of Apostles School; Brandy Hammond of Toledo School for the Arts; Amber Mitchell of Byrendale Junior High School, and Myriah Lewis of McTigue Junior High School.

Accompanied by two COSI team members, the students met with Sen. Mike Dewine in Washington, toured the Capitol, and visited officials from the Association of Science Technology Centers and the National Science Foundation and the Association of American Museums.

The new board members of the Toledo Hearing and Speech Center are Megan Malczewski of Signature Associates Oncor International, Debra Gossman of Gilmore, Jasion & Mahler, LTD; Daniel Saevig, University of Toledo; Jim Richard, retired from Medical College of Ohio, and Aaron Roth of Fifth Third Bank.

The center's officers for 2004-2005 include Nick Ulrich, president of Ulrich Pinciotti Design Group; Jennifer Coy, vice president of Key Bank; Dennis Caldwell, secretary of Bedford High School, and Frederick Fisher, treasurer of Westgate Meadows, Toledo.
