Woman, 19, charged with infant's death
7/16/2004A 19-year-old Hicksville, Ohio, woman is facing two felony charges in connection with the death of her newborn daughter.
Natalia Vogelsong was indicted by a Defiance County grand jury on one count of involuntary manslaughter, a first-degree felony, and one count of endangering children, a third-degree felony, assistant Defiance County prosecutor Morris Murray said yesterday.
The infant, Maria Helen Patricia Spangler, died from shock caused by blood loss and infant abandonment, according to Ralph Taylor, investigator/deputy coroner with the Allen County Coroner's Office in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Authorities allege that Miss Vogelsong "caused the death of her
newborn child as a proximate result of violating a duty of care, protection, or support of her child."
Miss Vogelsong declined comment, and the child's father, Jeff Spangler, could not be reached.
The infant was reportedly born at Miss Vogelsong's family residence between 9:15 and 9:45 p.m. May 25.
A family member brought the baby to Hicksville Community Memorial Hospital several hours after the child's birth, according to the Hicksville Police Department.
The child was transferred via air ambulance to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne and was pronounced dead about 4:30 a.m. May 26, roughly seven hours after she was born.
Miss Vogelsong is not in custody, but she is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in Defiance County Common Pleas Court.
