Baklava

4 cups walnuts, chopped

cup granulated sugar

teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

40 9-by-14-inch sheets phyllo (1 box),

thawed

1 cup butter, melted

Baklava Syrup (see recipe below)

Prepare syrup.

Combine walnuts, cinnamon, and cloves. Butter

and layer thawed phyllo dough according to package

directions. Brush a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with

butter. Place 10 buttered phyllo sheets in pan. Sprinkle

with 1/3 of walnut mixture. Place 5 more buttered phyllo

sheets on top, then 1/3 more of walnut mixture, top with

another 5 buttered phyllo sheets and the remaining

1/3 of walnut mixture. Finish baklava with 20 buttered

phyllo sheets. With a very sharp knife, score phyllo with

1 -inch diamonds or squares. Bake in preheated 350-

degree oven for 45 to 60 minutes or until golden brown.

Pour syrup evenly over baklava.

Yield: 44 pieces

2 cups granulated sugar

1 cup honey

2 cups water

2 tablespoons lemon juice

Bring all ingredients to a boil, reduce heat and simmer

10 minutes. Pour syrup evenly over hot baklava.

Let stand 2 to 3 hours.
