Sylvania Township: Strong response in favor of waste-hauling
8/11/2004A surprisingly strong response in favor of a waste-hauling program for Sylvania Township has led to a public hearing being arranged for residents.
Brad Peebles, township administrator, said 2,265 residents responded to a questionnaire regarding a township-wide hauling program and 2,028 said they favored looking into it.
Mr. Peebles said he has had preliminary discussions with waste-hauling firms and that it is likely homeowners will realize some savings if a sufficient percentage of them decide to take part in a township-wide program. He stressed that the township has no intention of forcing anyone to join in the proposed program and those who want to keep a private firm will be able to.
Township trustees had discussed the possibility three or four years ago, but dropped the idea when they said there was little interest from the community. Washington Township dropped the idea in 2002 after only a few residents expressed interest and Springfield Township trustees ended considering a plan after residents complained about it.
Although no details have been worked out, Mr. Peebles said initial talks have included the possibility that the township would act as the collection agent for the hauler and residents would probably be billed on a quarterly basis.
Other considerations include appliance pick-up and recycling programs.
He said solid information will be gathered for the residents to consider during the Sept. 16 public hearing at the township trustees' meeting.
