Sylvania: Council considers road work schedule
10/6/2004Sylvania City Council is looking ahead to next year's road work, even as this year's orange barrels are still decorating city streets.
Mayor Craig Stough told the council that the contract with ESA Engineers Surveyors & Associates LLC, needed to be approved now so that surveying and design work can be completed before winter weather arrives on a project for next year.
The streets the company will be concentrating on are all in the neighborhood of Sylvan Elementary School, and work will have to be done on them according to a schedule limited to when school is closed for summer vacation.
The work will include replacing all or part of Wedgewood Drive and Charlesgate, Coppersmith, Longfellow and Brookline roads.
The contract with ESA is for approximately $98,000.
Replacing the roads is estimated to cost about $875,000, according to Jeff Ballmer, public service director.
Mr. Ballmer said that although projects for this season are winding down, road replacement work is ongoing on a project on Rockdale Lane and Wakefield Drive. Work is also nearly complete on Long, Franklin, Park and Handy streets. The total cost of those two projects is about $1.3 million.
Work on Olde Post and Apple Meadow, which cost about $460,000 is essentially done.
The two major road improvement projects for the year have been completed.
Erie Street was widened and paved at a cost of about $1.3 million, but Mr. Ballmer said state and county funds paid for most of that project.
The work was completed by August so that it didn't interfere with the LPGA golf tournament at Highland Meadows Golf Club.
Another time-restricted project was Silica Road in front of Northview High School and along the west side of the school offices in the Burnham Building and Maplewood Elementary School.
It was done in two stages at a total cost of about $675,000.
Mr. Ballmer said 22 streets were improved this year by milling down the street surface, patching areas and resurfacing. the roadway.
