Anderson's art on federal duck stamp
10/19/2004The 2005-06 federal duck stamp will show a pair of hooded merganser drakes resting on sunlit water, based on a painting by noted wildlife artist Mark Anderson.
That is the word from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which recently announced that Anderson, of Sioux Falls, S.D., bested 223 other artists in the prestigious annual competition.
Anderson has won 15 state conservation stamp contests, is a heritage sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, a sponsor of the National Wild Turkey federation, and a member of Pheasants Forever.
"When I started painting about 20 years ago," said Anderson, "I had two goals in my life. One of then was to win the federal duck stamp contest. The other I haven't achieved yet, and that's to become Ducks Unlimited's International Artist of the Year."
He has been DU's state artist of the year four times in his home state, twice in Iowa, and once was DU's stamp artist of the year in Michigan. He is the Oklahoma artist of the year for 2005.
Since 1934, the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, better known as the federal duck stamp, has generated more than $670 million for acquisition of more than 5.2 million acres of crucial wetlands and associated habitat for the national wildlife refuge system.
Crossbow recall: Horton Manufacturing Co. Inc. has determined that under certain circumstances the limb-mounting system on select models of Horton crossbows may become unsafe.
Horton will remedy affected models without charge. They should not be used until repaired.
The affected models include Model CB610, Max Hunter 175, serial numbers below D 23000; Model CB625, Max Hunter 175 Bow Package, serial numbers below D 23000; Model CB710, Legend XL 175, serial numbers below E 64000; Model CB705, Legend XL 175 Bow Package, serial numbers below E 64000, and Model CB805, Explorer TR 175 Bow Package, serial numbers below I 77200.

Hot streak: When you're hot, you're hot, and these days 15-year-old Alec Vogelpohl of Genoa is hot.
You may have read in this space last Sunday how the teenage hunter and his buddy, Kirk Tank, teamed up to bag a snow goose, uncommon in these latitudes, along with their Canada goose limit of one each during the statewide youth waterfowl weekend Oct. 9 and 10.
Well, last Saturday, in a special draw-hunt for deer at the NASA Plum Brook Station near Sandusky, Alec bagged a nine-point piebald buck, said Chad Buehler, Alec's adult cousin who took the boys waterfowling.
"Can you believe the two weekends he had?" said Buehler.
A piebald deer is a partial albino and its coat is a mix of brown and white.
On the flip side, by the way, Alec's younger brother, Dustin, also hunted Plum Brook. He had an antlerless permit and saw only bucks, so he had no shot. When you're hot, you're hot; when you're not, you're not.
