Swanton: Council denies back sick pay for former employee

10/20/2004

A request from John Syx, Swanton's former village administrator, for sick leave pay has been denied by council members.

Mr. Syx was seeking about $400 in accumulated sick time, according to village officials who said that the former administrator is not entitled to the payments because he resigned from his post.

Village ordinances do not provide for severance pay for sick leave except upon retirement. Mr. Syx resigned as administrator in September, 2002, and applied for retirement in February, 2004. He recently requested that the village pay him for unused sick leave.

After an executive session to discuss the matter last week, village council members voted to deny the request. Councilman David Pilliod voted to accept it.
