SANDUSKY - The federal government has awarded more than $2.2 million to help fund safety and security improvements at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) announced yesterday.

The funds from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will cover 65 percent of the cost of adding a new fire alarm system, installing a new generator, and upgrading security at the 117-year-old facility, which houses more than 700 retired and disabled veterans.

"The funds ... will help ensure a safe and secure environment for these men and women who have served our country through the military," Miss Kaptur said.

The remaining funding for the $3.4 million project has been guaranteed by the state of Ohio.
