Maumee's development commissioner resigns post

3/30/2005

Kirk Kern, Maumee's commissioner of community development since 2002, has resigned, citing personal reasons.

"There are some personal and family concerns I have, and professionally, there are some things I'd like to do," Mr. Kern said. "I've really enjoyed being a part of the city's administration."

He has submitted his letter of resignation to the city and is taking vacation time until his resignation takes effect April 26. Mr. Kern said he has another job lined up but declined to elaborate.

Mr. Kern, a Maumee native, was paid an annual salary of about $68,600. He helped oversee several community projects, including $3 million in renovations to the Maumee Indoor Theatre.

Before becoming the city's commissioner of community development, Mr. Kern was assistant municipal administrator for the village of Waterville. He previously worked for the Lucas County Educational Service Center and in broadcasting.

Maumee Mayor Tim Wagener said he plans to meet soon with city officials to revise the commissioner of community development's job description and begin advertising for Mr. Kern's replacement.
