Stranded boater rescued by Guard at Magee Marsh

4/16/2005

A Kentucky man became stranded in his boat on the rocks near Magee Marsh after the vessel became disabled in the wind and the Lake Erie waters pushed it onto the shore.

David Barrett, 45, of Newport, Ky., was taken to an area hospital for observation after the incident about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, Toledo Coast Guard Petty Officer James Rowe said.

Mr. Barrett called in on his radio and reported his boat was disabled. Authorities couldn't reach him by boat, so they rescued him by truck about 1 a.m. after they drove down an access road and told him it was safe to walk ashore, Officer Rowe said.

Mr. Barrett was the only one aboard the 24-foot recreational fishing boat.
