BLUFFTON

  • Dr. Frank Dobson, director of the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center at Vanderbilt University, will speak at the opening convocation at Bluffton University at 10:45 a.m. tomorrow in Founders Hall.

    BOWLING GREEN

  • Author Kathryn R. Wall, a former Ohioan who writes the popular Bay Tanner mystery series, will talk about writing crime fiction at 7 tonight at the Wood County District Public Library, 251 North Main St. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library, the event is free and open to the public.

  • The Bowling Green ad-hoc parking committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in council chambers at city hall, 304 North Church St., to consider the impact of increasing parking fines, what is a reasonable increase in meter rates, a comparison of city and university meter rates, and the impact of enforcement from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Volunteers are needed to help with garden and nursery care for the Wood County Park District's native plant project at the Agricultural Incubator on State Rt. 582 west of State Rt. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Register on-line at www.wcparks.org.

    DEFIANCE

  • U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor (R., Old Fort) will meet with constituents from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the city's community room, 631 Perry St.

    FINDLAY

  • The Hancock Historical Museum will host its First Thursday Brown Bag Lunch lecture series at noon Thursday. Judy Dennis will speak about her mother-in-law, Margaret "Peg" McLeod Dennis, a Findlay native and writer. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for senior citizens. Bring your own lunch or buy a $5 lunch at the museum from Main Street Deli.

  • Jim Steffen, the author of several motivational books on how to exercise, will speak at 9 p.m. Thursday in the University of Findlay's Alumni Memorial Union multipurpose room about how to lose the "freshman 15" and eat and lose weight in a college setting. His presentation is free and open to the public.

    PORT CLINTON

  • Historic Port Clinton's Labor Day Extravaganza begins with a "Perch, Peach and Polka Fest" from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday downtown. In addition to perch dinners, peach treats, and polka dancing, there will be a small fry carnival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Sunday, from noon to 9 p.m. the focus will be on tunes, trucks, tacos, and tattoos. The event winds up with a pancake breakfast sponsored by Friends of the Port Clinton Parks from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 5.

    MARBLEHEAD

  • Middle Bass Island author Jean Gora will have a book signing at Ex Libris Bookshop, 314 West Main St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

    NORWALK

  • U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor (R., Old Fort) will meet with constituents from 2 to 3 p.m. tomorrow in the community room at the community center, 100 Republic St.

    OTTAWA

  • U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor (R., Old Fort) will meet with constituents from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the city's community room, 631 Perry St.

    PERRYSBURG

  • The candidates for mayor of Perrysburg will answer questions during a forum at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Perrysburg Senior Center, 140 West Indiana Ave. The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Perrysburg Area.

    TIFFIN

  • The Seneca County Junior Fair Foundation will hold the Tiffin Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Seneca County fairgrounds, 100 Hopewell Ave. Parking and admission are free. The Tri-County Garden Tractor Pullers also will conduct a pull at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m. Saturday at the fairgrounds.

    WAUSEON

  • U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor (R., Old Fort) will meet with constituents from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the second-floor conference room in the Fulton County Administration Building, 152 South Fulton St.

    TOLEDO

  • Amy Stone of the Ohio State University Extension office in Toledo will discuss the emerald ash borer during the Rotary Club of Toledo's weekly meeting at noon today at Zenobia Shrine, 1511 Madison Ave.
