DEFIANCE The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled a public hearing next week on how construction of a realigned, four-lane U.S. 24 in Defiance and Paulding counties could affect water quality in the area.

The hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 19 in the Tiffin Room at Defiance Regional Medical Center, 1200 Ralston Ave. During the session, Ohio EPA officials will accept comments on a proposed water-quality certification and isolated wetland permit for the project, which would cover 26 miles from the Ohio-Indiana border to State Rt. 18 in Defiance County.

The project would affect part of the Maumee River and about 20 acres of wetlands. Besides conducting the hearing, the agency will accept written comments through Oct. 26 at Ohio EPA, Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio, 43216-1049.
