Many Veterans Day events slated in area

A Veterans Day Appreciation Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. tomorrow in the Toledo Sports Arena exhibition hall. Retired Ohio Army National Guard Maj. Gen. J. Ronald Bowman, who is also a retired Lucas County Common Pleas Court judge, will be the keynote speaker.

A yellow ribbon walk to International Park for a wreath laying will follow. The breakfast is free. Reservations are required. Call 419-254-4633.

A consortium of student organizations at Owens Community College is hosting a tribute to veterans that begins at 1 p.m. today in front of Administration Hall on the Perrysburg Township campus. Afterward, Robert Stewart, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and president of the Lucas County Veterans Services Commission, will share his wartime experiences.

A Veterans Day program on the college's Findlay campus will begin at 5 p.m. and include a flag retirement ceremony. Guest speaker Sgt. Andrew Sterling, an Owens student, will discuss his recent military experience in Iraq. A showing of the Academy Award-winning film Saving Private Ryan will follow.

U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) will be the keynote speaker at the Veterans Day breakfast at 9 a.m. tomorrow at DeVeaux Junior High School, 2626 West Sylvania Ave.

Miss Kaptur will receive an award from the Ohio Military Order of the Purple Heart in recognition of her initiative to have the World War II Memorial built in Washington.

A Veterans Day program is set for noon Saturday in International Park. Veterans organizations are asked to bring their colors. Parking is free at the park.

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at Arthur Daly American Legion Post 334, 504 Main St.
