11/12/2005

DELTA, Ohio - Smoke from a leaf or paper fire ignited a field of corn stubble and caused near-whiteout conditions on the eastbound Ohio Turnpike east of here about 1 p.m. yesterday, leading to a nine-vehicle crash.

Two tractor-trailers also crashed as smoke billowed across the road, the Ohio Highway Patrol said. Three people were hurt, none seriously.

One lane remained open as the wreckage was cleared and smoke cleared. Traffic returned to normal within 90 minutes.
