Washington Twp. leak shuts down 5 gas lines

1/8/2006

About 20 to 40 gallons of gasoline leaked from a pipeline yesterday in Washington Township, authorities said.

A resident on the 800 block of Omar Avenue called authorities shortly after 2 p.m. complaining of a gas odor. The Washington Township Fire Department, Toledo s Environmental Services Division, and other agencies responded.

There are about five pipelines in the Omar-Stickney Avenue area, and authorities were not sure last night which was responsible for the leak, said Casey Stephens, commissioner of the Environmental Services Division.

All pipelines were shut down while Sunoco Logistics took charge of the cleanup, which involves vacuuming the petroleum product and excavating the soil, Mr. Stephens said. After they discover which line leaked the gasoline, it will be repaired, he said.

No homes were evacuated, and the leak did not cause any danger to area residents.
