Maumee: Fire station design, site work start to shape up
1/11/2006Work on Maumee's long-sought new fire station is progressing, with the design in a conceptual phase and preliminary site work under way.
The city closed on the property, which is along Illinois Avenue near Kingsbury Street, last month, and will take possession of the land later this month.
Larry Gamble, the city's director of public service, said the fire department and consultants from Poggemeyer Design Group are discussing the size and layout of the building's rooms.
Fire Chief Richard Monto said the city is working on conceptual drawings of the station, trying to make decisions.
"We're narrowing it down," he said.
In the next two weeks, he said, they will begin going over more specific drawings.
"The design is more in the schematic phase right now," Mr. Gamble said.
He said the city would like to have the project out for bids by late February or early March.
The council last week approved a contract for an asbestos survey of the property's existing buildings, which need to be demolished. The survey is required by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to see if asbestos would be a problem during demolition, Mr. Gamble said.
The Mannik and Smith Group of Maumee will be paid $1,400 for the work.
Council also approved a contract for soil borings that are needed to ensure the building is constructed with an appropri-ate foundation able to bear the building's weight.
The type of soil and depth of the water table will affect the construction.
TTL Associates Inc. of Toledo will be paid $3,700 for the work. Construction work could take 16 to 18 months, Chief Monto said.
The city paid about $1.5 million for the land along Illinois Avenue, formerly owned by DGT Enterprises.
The station, which will have access to Illinois Avenue and Kingsbury Street, will replace Station No. 1 on East William Street.
