5/21/2006

Steve Pollick, The Blade's outdoors editor, has been named the state's top outdoors newspaper columnist for 2005 by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio.

Mr. Pollick was cited by competition judge Eric Sharp of the Detroit News for a dozen 2005 columns on topics ranging from grizzly bears, Alaskan oil drilling, and back-yard coyotes to stream litter, roadside mowing, deer hunting, and walleye research, among others.

Mr. Pollick was also awarded first place for best series in newspapers for six stories he wrote on the 35th annual BASS Classic, held last July in Pittsburgh on the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela rivers.

An article by Mr. Pollick in November on the feared Asian-strain of bird flu and the potential relationship with migratory birds, appearing in the Behind the News section, was awarded a second-place award in the best article newspaper category.

OWO announced the awards at its annual meeting recently at Salt Fork State Park in Guernsey County.
