Michigan senator lauded for her advocacy work

Michigan Sen. Beverly Hammerstrom (R., Temperance) recently was recognized for her service to people with mental illness or developmental disabilities with LifeWays 2006 Legislative Advocacy and Public Policy Award.

Senator Hammerstrom has been a tireless and dedicated advocate for those most in need in our state. Her efforts to assist Michigan s mental health community have had an immeasurable impact, said Nancy Miller, LifeWays chief executive officer. The Jackson, Mich. firm manages behavioral health treatment services for Hillsdale and Jackson counties.

LifeWays recognized Ms. Hammerstrom for helping to rewrite the state s mental health code and making mental health issues a priority in her role as chairman of the Senate Health Policy Committee.
