12/23/2006

Five area organizations that provide support for low and moderate-income people received a total of more than $30,000 through the Fifth Third Foundation.

The largest recipient was the Toledo-based Northwest Ohio Development Agency, which was awarded $10,000 to provide matched dollars to help low and moderate-income individuals begin Individual Development Accounts.

The savings accounts can be used only to buy a first home, to capitalize a small business, or for educational or job training expenses.

Other recipients were:

•The Northwestern Ohio Community Action Commission in Defiance: $5,000 to help start up individual development accounts.

•The Firelands Habitat for Humanity in Huron, Ohio: $5,000 to help build a habitat home.

•The Community Foundation of Monroe County in Michigan: $4,450 to support their partnership with the God Works Family Soup Kitchen.

•The United Way of Monroe in Michigan: $5,750 to support Monroe County's mentors for at-risk youth program called the Active Balanced Community Initiative.

The Fifth Third Foundation was established in 1948 to provide funds for projects that further art and culture, community development, education, and social services.
