Firefighters in Lyons battle blaze in own building

Firefighters suck insulation out of the Lyons Fire Station today.

LYONS, Ohio About 40 firefighters from Lyons and surrounding communities are taking out insulation from the attic of the Lyons Royalton Township Fire Department to determine the cause of a smoky fire this morning.

Lyons Fire Chief Art Call said he received a call about 10:15 a.m. today from staff who said they smelled smoke at the fire station. When they investigated, they found the attic filled with smoke.

Using a thermal imaging camera, the firefighters discovered the blown-in insulation, installed when the building was built in 1979, which was burning.

Firefighters from Lyons, Arcbhold, Wauseon, Morenci, Mich. and Fairfield Township in Lenawee County are currently sucking the insulation out of the building into a pile, where they are then extinguishing the pieces.

Chief Call said he expects firefighters will be on the scene for several hours and, although he knows the fire started in the southeast corner of the attic where a furnace and lights are, the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The damage is expected to be several thousand dollars.
