All eyes on Liz Honegger

Liz Honegger's strength allows her to hold her own against players 4-5 inches taller than her.

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It's always fun to see what outsiders notice about teams when seeing them for the first time.

As I mentioned, other media members and I were in awe of the Delaware State band Sunday, to the point where we were cheering for media timeouts (or for Del State to call a timeout) so we could hear them.

I was sitting next to the Delaware State beat writer, and he joked, "yay, the band!" He had heard those fabulous music makers all year long.

The main thing everyone noticed about Bowling Green yesterday was Liz Honegger.

Honegger does not look like the typical 3-point shooter. Namely, she's big and not very quick. She also does not shoot like the typical 3-point shooter. She extends the ball behind her head before launching it up.

During and after the game, I had people coming up to me saying, "I can't believe she pulls the ball so far back like that to shoot!" Everyone was in awe of the three 3-pointers Liz nailed in the second half.

Fellow Toledo sports blogger Matt Sussman nicknamed her, "The Catapult."

My editor gave Liz an ironic nickname, "Big Country" Honegger after the former Oklahoma State star Bryant Reeves, who was known for making clutch shots.

Anyone who has followed Bowling Green more than casually knows that Honegger is the school-record holder for 3-pointers. Yesterday was not something new. The only new thing to me was that an Oklahoma State player actually blocked one of Liz's shots. I don't think I had ever seen that happen because of her shooting motion. The secret was that time they guarded her from the side.

Today BGSU has a closed practice for an hour and a half and then interviews. The coaches scouted Vanderbilt last week and then got to see them live yesterday.

Game time is set for 9:30 p.m. on ESPN2. Boy, that start time makes me happy.
