Heading Off To A Journalism Workshop

5/23/2007

WEDNESDAY

6 AM

No post tomorrow. I m heading out of town absurdly early in the morning and won t be back until dinnertime.

I m off to be part of the third Ethics Workshop for working journalists, put on through the combined efforts of the venerable Poynter Institute and Kent State University s J school.

As event literature explains:

The workshop includes frank discussion, practical tips for working journalists, and real case studies to dissect and debate. New topics this year include dilemmas for online journalism.

That s where I come in, apparently.

I m scheduled (a late addition, I believe) to be on this panel: Are There Ethics in Cyberspace?

Among the questions my fellow panelists and I will kick around (or so the seminar literature promises) are these: Does user-generated content make everybody a journalist? What do we do about online hate speech vs. free speech? We re also going to learn more about Poynter s Guidebook for Online Ethics.

Before I go, I d love to hear from anyone now reading this.
