About 2,500 Toledo Edison customers in the Alexis-Telegraph roads area were without power yesterday afternoon after a squirrel got into a transformer at the utility s substation, an Edison spokesman said.

Power was interrupted about 1:45 p.m. and restored to most of the customers within an hour. But more than 700 customers were without power for about three hours because of extensive damage to the substation, Edison spokesman Gary Keys said.

Some businesses closed for the afternoon because of the outage, and there were several minor traffic crashes in the area while traffic signals were out, authorities said.
