Marla Halko, a UPS employee, yesterday received a Presidential Service Award for Volunteerism from U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D., Toledo) during a gathering at the UPS facility in Maumee.

Mrs. Halko was honored by the President s Council on Service and Civic Participation for her fund-raising and education efforts to combat progeria, a disease that causes accelerated aging.

Her daughter, Kaylee, 4, has the condition.

Mrs. Halko was nominated for the award by UPS, where she has worked 11 years.

The company encourages employees to volunteer, and Mrs. Halko went up and beyond our volunteer service, said Terrence Thomas, UPS division manager.

We felt recognizing Marla would be good recognition for her [and] for the company and what we represent.
