KELLEYS ISLAND, Ohio If it takes a village to raise a child, then it takes an island to graduate one. Emphasis on one. When Brian Terry marched down the center of the Kelleys Island School gymnasium to the sound of Pomp and Circumstance as the sole member of the Class of 2008, there were more than 80 islanders there to watch him probably more than half the population that lives year round on the isolated getaway off the coast of Marblehead.

ANN ARBOR - If Michiganz is to have any hope of returning to its former prosperity, everyone agrees it needs to attract the high-tech, highly-skilled, "new-economy" jobs of the future. That hasn't been easy. True, the state has one superior and two excellent research universities within an easy drive of each other.

Theo O Neill isn t surprised that the CEO s sale of $400 million in company stock over the past two years raised eyebrows this week among investors at Toledo-born First Solar Inc. But Mr. O Neill, a Wall Street financial analyst, has bigger concerns. He expects that a key group of rivals will become more competitive with First Solar as a result of possibly steep price decreases in an important raw material they use.

Ray Fisher has spent a decade learning to lock away the everyday sights and sounds that serve as constant reminders of his teenage daughter's murder. But no matter how thick the concrete or high the barbed wire at the Toledo Correctional Institution, knowing that the man who shot Misty Fisher through the back of her head is locked up just down the street is something that Mr. Fisher can't reconcile.

Thanks to Carrie Underwood, wishing wells are going to be getting a lot of action around town from little girls who want to grow up to be just like her. When I was little, I knew I loved to sing, and it was a lot of fun for me, so I would find four-leaf clovers or throw pennies into a wishing well. My wish was always, I want to be a famous country singer, Underwood says by phone as her tour bus rolls down the road. As I got older, I was like, The chances of that happening aren t very good, so I concentrated on school and what I wanted to do in the real world, then everything else happened.

Thousands of utility customers remained without electricity Sunday morning in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan as line crews continued to repair damage by severe thunderstorms that raked the region Friday evening. The latest estimate from Toledo Edison was 3,000 customers without power. Reggie Strauss, a utility spokesman, said the heaviest concentration of outages was in Henry County, where 1,700 customers were still in the dark as of 11:30 a.m.

GRAND RAPIDS, Ohio - The young mother they had just pulled out of the river was an awful blue color and rag-doll limp, her eyes rolled back in her head, muddy water coming out of her mouth, and showing almost no sign of life. "I started doing CPR and everything else disappeared," George Foos said, recalling the adrenaline-fueled effort to save 29-year-old Candy St. Marie, who was in serious condition in St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center last night.

Karyn McConnell Hancock, who is being investigated for the theft of client funds while she served as an attorney, filed for divorce in Lucas County Domestic Relations Court, citing incompatibility and "extreme cruelty" on the part of her husband. Ms. McConnell Hancock filed the paperwork May 30 asking for a divorce from Lawrence Hancock, Sr., her husband of four years. Long-time weekend sports anchor Gary Sensenstein is leaving WTOL-TV, Channel 11, after nearly 25 years at the CBS affiliate. He spent his last day on the job yesterday, covering high school baseball, a sport he loves, said the station's sports anchor, Dan Cummins.

WHO? When? Republicans, including, I imagine, Sen. John McCain himself, are asking these questions about his selection of a vice presidential candidate. Ideally, a presidential candidate wants a running mate who will help him or her win the election, and (maybe) govern afterwards. But most will settle for a veep who isn't a drag on the ticket, as Dan Quayle was for the first President Bush.
