Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner told all 13 members of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority board yesterday that his request for the agency s president to be investigated and suspended revolved around questions concerning an alleged extramarital affair with a lobbyist. Mr. Finkbeiner on Tuesday asked William Carroll, chairman of the agency s board, to suspend James Hartung, who has been president of the port authority since 1994.

In an unusually long and detailed ruling, the Ohio 6th District Court of Appeals yesterday upheld the 2006 conviction of Toledo Catholic priest Gerald Robinson for the 1980 murder of a nun. The three-judge panel, in a 95-page ruling, meticulously reviewed and rejected a litany of claims made by Robinson s attorneys, including ineffective defense counsel, a lack of DNA evidence, injecting Satanism into the trial as a possible motive for the murder, and the loss of evidence and key witnesses over the years.

COLUMBUS - Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel has a book coming out this week, but if the coaches around the Big Ten are anxiously awaiting a "tell all" and the inside data on the Buckeyes it might reveal, they will be disappointed. But for fans of the Buckeyes and their ultra-successful coach, The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life should provide some insights into what makes Tressel tick, and some anecdotal information that amounts to a sneak peek behind the curtain of secrecy that normally surrounds the Ohio State football operation.

Dottie Zimmerman is a 63-year-old mother of three, an award-winning religion teacher at a Toledo Catholic school, a former Ursuline nun, and a director of the Children's Theatre Workshop. For the last five years, Mrs. Zimmerman also says she has been "channeling" Padre Pio, letting the dead Italian Catholic saint mystically speak through her.

As recently as August, 2006, passenger service at Toledo Express Airport was potentially in a growth mode. That was when the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority secured a $400,000 federal grant, to be matched by $200,000 in port authority funds plus in-kind marketing assistance, to subsidize a proposed Toledo-New York route. Officials believed such a route could attract tens of thousands of travelers who, according to a 2004 study, flew between the two cities each year but used nonstop service from Detroit Metropolitan-Wayne County Airport to do it.

Josh Fowler may not have understood fully the gravity of the situation when he and his mother found themselves homeless, again, last year. For 7-year-old Josh, being homeless meant a 40-minute ride on a city bus to and from his school. It meant two moves while his mother, Karen, 40, underwent a second stint in drug treatment.

Gov. Ted Strickland, during a picnic yesterday afternoon in International Park, extended his sympathies to the victims of the fire that earlier this month destroyed nine buildings at the Hunters Ridge apartment complex in South Toledo. City officials estimated that 100 former Hunters Ridge residents attended the picnic, which offered free food, entertainment, and Red Cross resources.

They're powerful, have a reputation for aggression, and are something of a status symbol. Dog Warden Tom Skeldon says they're also a big problem in Toledo and Lucas County. 'They' are pit bulls. The number of pit bulls seized for violating dog laws in Lucas County has increased steadily since 1997 and last year made up 34 percent of the canines at the county pound.
