Erie MetroParks reopen portion of Greenway

9/2/2008

HURON, Ohio The northern section of Erie MetroParks Greenway has been reopened, offering limited use for visitors who want to follow the course along the river and former railroad, the district said.

The remainder of the parkway is closed while legal issues with adjacent landowners are resolved. Parking is available only at the DuPont Marsh lot; parking on River View Drive, a private road, is off limits.

Landowners say the ErieMetroParks system illegally claimed ownership of the strip of land that once was a railroad bed that followed part of the old Milan Canal.

Director Stephen Dice said the open stretch of Greenway is about 1.2 miles long so a round trip provides a good workout walking or jogging.

This time of year, marshland plants are blooming, and they often attract butterflies, he said.
