Girl struck by vehicle in South Toledo

A 6-year-old girl was struck by a car in South Toledo after she pulled away from her mother Wednesday afternoon while they were walking to get gas, authorities said.

The child was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital, where her condition was not known.

Toledo police Sgt. Sharon McCalebb said the accident happened about 3:30 p.m. at Heatherdowns Boulevard and South Byrne Road. The child's mother was driving eastbound on Heatherdowns, approaching Byrne, when she ran out of gas.

The driver exited the vehicle with her daughter and another child who had been riding inside her Jeep Liberty. As they headed to a nearby gas station, the girl pulled away. She was struck by an westbound vehicle on Heatherdowns.
