Clay captures CL girls golf title

Clay has had a girls golf team for 12 years and Thursday the Eagles captured their first championship, winning the City League tournament at Detwiler Golf Course by two strokes over four-time defending champion St. Ursula.

St. Ursula junior Alex Graf carded a 79 to take the tournament's individual medal honors.

Contributing to the Eagles' scoring were their four seniors — Jennifer Scharer (85), Amanda Maze (88), Alexa Orr (90) and Heather Pollauf (95) — who posted a team score of 358 to complete Clay's climb from a fourth-place finish in this tournament last season.

“I wasn't really surprised,” said 12th-year Clay coach Kevin Crosson, “because St. Ursula, Notre Dame and Whitmer all graduated some of their top players, and we had all veterans returning who had four years of varsity experience.

“We've improved a lot since last year. The last few years we took our lumps, but we kept working at it and our hard work finally paid off.”

St. Ursula, which had won the four previous City titles, edged Notre Dame 360-361 for second place.

Joining Graf and Scharer on the All-City first team were Mary Carrigan (82) of Central Catholic, Carrie Krum (85) of Whitmer, and Jessica Antypas (86) of Notre Dame.
