  • If you want to set a speed record, how do you make a train go faster? Equip it with jet engines. In a July 23, 1966, test run for New York Central railcar M-497, twin jet engines were mounted on the car’s roof. This Blade archive photo was shot along a 30-mile straight stretch of track in Williams County, as the train set a U.S. railroad speed record of 183.85 mph. At the time, New York Central said the speed test was to see if high-speed shuttle train service between major cities would make sense. But thanks to airlines, automobiles, and relatively inexpensive gasoline, the experiment faded away. Another problem with high-speed trains in the United States was the county’s railroad infrastructure. The world train speed record in 1966 was just over 200 miles an hour, and Asia and Europe, including Japan and France, boasted the fastest commuter trains in the world. But those trains had the advantage of running on separate tracks to avoid road crossings and slower-moving freight trains. An Ohio Historic Marker was placed at the train station near Bryan in November, 2003, to commemorate the U.S. speed record.
