The Central Catholic Fighting Irish started the season an inauspicious 1-2. They lost to eventual Michigan D-2 state champion Warren De La Salle 21-14 in the opener, then fell 35-28 at Perrysburg in Week 3. The Yellow Jackets (11-1) would be ranked No. 1 in Ohio’s final Division II state poll. Twelve weeks later, however, Central (13-2) won its 12th straight game and finished off a third state championship in 10 seasons with an unforgettable 56-52 victory against second-ranked The Plains Athens (14-1) and their star QB — Joe Burrow, Ohio's Mr. Football — in the Division III final at Ohio Stadium in Columbus.
