Naturalization ceremony

Thirty-two people, originally from 20 countries, were sworn in as U.S. citizens at a naturalization ceremony held Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, at the Toledo Club downtown. U.S. District Judge Jack Zouhary, who presided at the 60-minute ceremony, welcomed the new citizens in each of the languages of their native countries. P.J. Wood of Oregon heads out to take his daily walk Tuesday at Pearson Metropark in Oregon. Mr. Wood said he generally walks at the park five days a week. Snow fell through Tuesday morning.

Snow falls across Toledo area

Toledo, which as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, had gotten just seven-tenths of an inch of snow at the airport. The cold is making its return this week, with forecasters predicting near-zero temperatures for the weekend and saying they’re likely to stay below freezing until early next week. Customers got the jump on Fat Tuesday at Haas Bakery in Oregon. The bakery whipped up about 1,500 dozen paczki this year in 24 varieties.

A Bowling Green State University professor and an undergraduate student were in Antarctica to study dormant volcanoes that have only been visited once before.

Telegrapher Barney Stickles, 84, has partnered with the Toledo-Lucas County Library to display his extensive collection of telegraphy equipment and other historical objects related to the practice.

“The telegraph was the Victorian Internet,” said Byron “Barney” Stickles, a Maumee resident who considers himself the last of the railroad telegraphers in the area, and has a substantial collection of telegraphy equipment on display at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s main location in downtown Toledo.
