Paczki at Haas Bakery in Oregon

Customers got the jump on Fat Tuesday at Haas Bakery in Oregon. The bakery whipped up about 1,500 dozen paczki this year in 24 varieties.

A Bowling Green State University professor and an undergraduate student were in Antarctica to study dormant volcanoes that have only been visited once before.

Telegrapher Barney Stickles, 84, has partnered with the Toledo-Lucas County Library to display his extensive collection of telegraphy equipment and other historical objects related to the practice.

“The telegraph was the Victorian Internet,” said Byron “Barney” Stickles, a Maumee resident who considers himself the last of the railroad telegraphers in the area, and has a substantial collection of telegraphy equipment on display at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library’s main location in downtown Toledo.

A line of buyers are helped by volunteers Shaulonda Jones, at the end of the table, and Michelle Wasylecki at the cash register, during a paczki sale, organized to support ONE (Old North End) Village neighborhoods of Toledo.

The house on Doug Pratt's 160-acre farm in Perrysburg Township dates back to 1825 and is one of the oldest in the area.

Historic Farms

A portrait of Elijah E. Myers hangs in the Michigan Senate meeting room bearing his name in the state Capitol, in Lansing, Mich.
