The Queen of the Ice Crushers was named the Mackinaw, and it was built in 1943 and 1944 at the Toledo Shipbuilding Co. It was considered the strongest ice breaker in the world and cost $10 million. The mammoth Toledo-made craft is shown in this Toledo Times photo, taken from a stern-view, on Feb. 27, 1944. The vessel was formally christened in Toledo on March 4, 1944.

This week marks the 65th Anniversary Celebration of the opening of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Plaza, located at 300 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in South Toledo. A number of local officials were on hand Tuesday, September 22, 2015, to mark the occasion, with a historical presentation, informational booths, model trains and a telegraph operator. The then-new Central Union Terminal first opened its doors in September of 1950, and continues to serve thousands of train passengers each year. Pictured is the station's passenger waiting and ticket sales area.
