Fremont-jpg-1

We know that spring has arrived when the trees begin to leaf out, and the fishermen converge on area rivers and lakes. This pretty scene of fishermen in the Sandusky River in downtown Fremont was captured by Blade photographer Don Flory on May 7, 1970. As it winds through Fremont, the Sandusky River is a popular springtime fishing site, drawing anglers from across Ohio and southern Michigan. They come first to fish the annual walleye spawning run that takes place in March and April, and then the white bass run which overlaps the end of the walleye run in late April, and extends into mid-May. Anglers pursue these two common Lake Erie species by wading in the shallower areas, and using small boats in the deeper sections of the river.
