VLT-interurban-crash-1

In what was at the time called the worst accident in the history of the Detroit Limited Railway Lines; eight people died and 30 were injured when two interurban trolley cars from the Detroit, Monroe, and Toledo route crashed head-on. A northbound car left Toledo at 12:25 p.m. Sept. 2, 1926. The southbound car left Detroit at 12:29 p.m. The trains were traveling on the same track. The southbound train was instructed to pull off onto a side track cut-off to wait for the northbound train to pass. That train’s conductor saw a northbound interurban that had pulled off on the opposite side track, mistakenly assumed that was the train he was supposed to wait for, and he proceeded toward Monroe. Unfortunately there was a second train heading northbound.
